Basically it's a more graphic and slighted varied version of the 'Sim-City' games, where you build infrastructure etc for a place or city.

The interesting thing about the latest version of 'Build A lot' (build lots of things, and build on lots of land..very clever) is that it contains several sustainable initiatives.

Wind farms can be built for power not coal plants, and solar panels for power and satilits dishes for TV can be applied to the houses, and it goes on...

I'm not saying that this is in any way adding anything substantial to the debate/cause, but I do think that it is another example of how these things are penetrating through to the mainstream.

See any of the links below for references/ download :
http://www.retro64.com/build-a-lot_4:_power_source_game.asp
http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/6011/build-a-lot-4-power-source/index.html
http://www.retro64.com/build-a-lot_4:_power_source_game.asp
http://jayisgames.com/archives/2009/08/build_a_lot_4_power_source.php

All above links were accessed on the 30th September 2009

A review from http://www.retro64.com/build-a-lot_4:_power_source_game.asp:
"The fourth version of the legendary Build-a-lot series of games is here, and this time the focus is on green energy! Help out the townsfolk by making solar towers and wind farms to produce clean power. But we wouldn't want to skimp on the essentials, of course. That's why you can also add tennis courts, swimming pools, and exclusive boutiques. It's the best Build-a-lot yet!"
Accessed 30th September 2009

Quick case studies:

Freiburg Housing :

“Freiburg, a historic town in South-Western Germany, has been leading environmental policy and practice for over two decades in Europe, and its two urban extensions Vauban and Rieselfeld have generated great interest.”

Again simply put, this small housing development, over its projected life span, will produce more energy than it consumes.

The biggest and hardest question to answer, and one I’m not sure if I’ll get to is....

Do these calculations include the energy cost (or requirement) of construction?

Or do they simply ‘RUN’ on lower energy levels?

News article : Is this the greenest city in the world? http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/23/freiburg.germany.greenest.city Accessed 16 September 2009 . I have seen real scale models of the project and its just hard to comprehend the density, initiative and infrastructure that goes into something like this..

But it very much appear to be going ahead, and I’m sure that there are some very serious contracts that stipulate that it musty be built to certain speciation’s and essentially stand up to the claims that have been made...

i.e that it will be the world first carbon neutral city and that it will, in a nut shell, produce more energy than it consumes...

(Something that if you think about, is just a VERY cool/exciting/amazing idea)

Its definitely worth a look if you have the spare time..

I have only posted a small amount of information here, so more links are below:

The Home page : www.masdar.ae/ So I’ll call them tomorrow.

2005 HIA Green Smart Awards, Building of the Year.
2005 HIA Green Smart Awards, Energy Efficiency Award.
2005 RAIA Architecture Award, Ecologically Sustainable Development Award.
2002 Winner, Banksia Environmental Award.
2002 RAIA Energy Conservation Award, Commendation.
1999 RAIA Energy Conservation Award, Award of Merit.
1996 WA Energy Efficiency Awards, Commercial Buildings.
1996 RAIA Energy Conservation Award: Commendation.
1995 HIA Design Awards, Individually Designed Home of the Year.
1995 HIA Design Awards, Individually Designed Home of the Year.
1995 HIA Design Awards, Albany Golden Key Award.
1994 RAIA Energy Conservation Award, Award of Merit.
1993 National Energy Awards, Buildings.

http://www.ecotect-architects.com/

Road Trip - Master Planned Developments

I have decided that I will be spending some time on the weekend to go and see what's going on in Ellenbrook.

"How is Blackle saving energy?
Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.
We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.
How can you help?
We encourage you to set Blackle as your home page. This way every time you load your Internet browser you will save a little bit of energy. Remember every bit counts! You will also be reminded about the need to save energy each time you see the Blackle page load.
Help us spread the word about Blackle by telling your friends and family to set it as their home page. If you have a blog then give us a mention. Or put the following text in your email signature: "Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time".
Have a look at our energy saving tips page for ideas on steps you can take to save energy or you can follow Blackle on Twitter and we will keep you updated with simple energy saving tips.
There are a lot of great web sites about saving energy and being more environmentally friendly. And I thought that having taught myself this much so far, I would be able to continue this learning process on my own (outside of the university structures and pressures).

I also realised that without question, one weakness of mine is the understanding of sustainable practices, and as yet I have not had a unit or the time to focus on this increasingly important topic.

As such, my topic turned to 'using the computer for good', and its ability to analyse data to produce ratings and readings regarding the different components and elements of a building.i.e. the amount of sun light entering a room, the cost of heating a space or the ecological cost of a building...

This is now my topic and posts from now on will reflect this.

Today I am planning to watch a video entitled HOME.

My understanding is that it will provide a large amount of quantifiable information about the energy use, living standards and impact our (‘humanities’) current lifestyle is having on the planet.

It’s general background information and I am planning on taking notes and screen shots throughout the movie for latter posts.

Previous Work : 3d prints

A render of the models that I am about to print.
